Central European Wars 1918-21 by Philip Jowett; Osprey Modern history claims that the killing stopped at 11.00am on 11.11.18. That might have been true for the Western Front but it continued elsewhere in Europe and Eurasia - the Allied Campaign against the Bolsheviks (I'm intrigued by the Czech Legion fighting its way from the Black Sea to Vladivostok and stealing the Russian gold reserves along the way!), civil wars in Germany, Finland, Ukraine and Russia, the Russo-Polish War and the Greco-Turkish War. Added to these, the newly independent states of German-Austria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, the State of Slovenes Croats and Serbs, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Hungary (Royal, Peoples Republic and Red Republic) and the existing states of Serbia and Romania all fought over territory, resources, political ideology and historical grievances - all of which remain extant today. There were also several attempted national uprisings. This 48 page title deals with the little reported conflicts that occurred in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire and is divided into these chapters; Chronology Uniforms Weaponry Operations backed up by 8 pages of colour artwork of uniforms with extensive captions. It occasionally struggles to explain the various confusing factors involved (these were probably confusing to the participants as well). By early 1922 the participants had fought themselves to a standstill. The author makes no attempt to look at external players (Britain, France, Italy and Russia for a start), which would probably require another 48 pages. Unhappily the problems/grievances were not resolved. Had the major powers shown a little less self-interest and the League of Nations not been a total waste of space these may well not have flared up again 20 years later, nor in the 1990's, nor currently with the neo-Nazi's in Western Ukraine (it's really Easter Poland). For anyone looking for a concise explanation of this fascinating post-Great War period in Central Europe. this book is recommended.
